I have recently been in the UK at an indie style festival called Flatpack Film Festival, where I did a talk with the very talented David Wilson. In London I was also invloved in an art exhibition called Barebones. You can take a look at there website here: www.ourbarebones.com
I was involved in the video section, being one of about 12 film makers this year to create a 1 minute black and white punk crazy video which was basically just what ever you want. The exhibition was a big success and really just a massive party with loads of cool hand drawn art and videos.

My music video has been featured in a number of magazines including Stash, IdN and shots... here's a picture or you can read the one from shots here: www.vdubfilms.com/doc/SH128_p87_NEW_DIRECTORS.pdf

The music video has also been included in a couple of film festivals. Firstly NFFTY (National Film Festival For Talented Youth) in Seattle in animation! It's screening on the 30th of April.

It has also been selected in the youth section of the Chicago International Film Fesival... Cineyouth. It is playing on both Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th of May in the animation/music video section.

EDIT: Also just found out the music video is in Dungog Film Festival playing on Friday the 27th of May in Dungog New South Wales:)

making of Papa Vs Pretty's 'Wrecking Ball' Music video

Making this video was a huge job for one person! But i had plenty of time because I'm at uni with loads of holidays and I really wanted to make something interesting. I started the video in August 2010 and finished in on the 20th of January 2011. But I was doing a whole bunch of things for a lot of the time so it wasn't full time work.

Anyway, after I had written the treatment and it was all good the first thing I had to do was build the life size animate-able characters/find a place to shoot/props and find a set. Location wise I looked around for a while and I managed to find a great location in one of my family friends houses. I asked her and she was willing to let me use it which was amazing. She was also very open to timing which was good!

Building the puppets was very veery tricky.

My first attempt at building a life-size puppet was pretty much doing exactly that.
I bought really thick armature wire(that is v. expensive) and bent it into the right skeletal shape (the same a miniature armature needs to be created at) Then I tried to bend the extremely thick wire so that different parts attached together. This wasn't working... The wire wouldnt bend together properly, the armature was too frail and hard to use and it took way to long... I realized I needed to use materials other then wire, something more solid. My obvious choice was wood. I would use wood for the shoulders and the hips. Luckily the characters were sitting for most of the time because allowing them to be able to walk would have been almost impossible.
I glued the parts together with liquid nails.

Anyway if your interested here's sort of the process I went through while making the upper bodies:
-cut two pieces of wood for shoulders/hips
-cut 2 long pieces of 1/4inch armature wire for arms/body + 1 more half the length for the body to ensure it is very strong.
-glue it all together with liquid nails like the pictures above
-drill holes in the sides of the shoulders and add another length of 1/4inch wire
-twist the two piece's of wire on the arms around a piece's of cushion foam
-cover the bodies in the same foam using spray foam glue (you can get it from a foam shop like Clark's Rubber) and sculpt the bodies with scissors.

Add the neck;
-drill two small holes on the shoulders
-glue in two short pieces of 1/4inch wire

And then the legs
-drill two holes for the legs to be added on the hips
-glue in the pieces of 2/3inch wire for legs so they are more stable.
-cover the wire with more foam

For the arms I also added piece's of PVC pipe to act as bone and ensure human like arm movements.

The characters each ended up being about 160cm except the kid who was more like 100cm.

For the heads I got some of those plastic heads they use to teach people how to cut hair. I just asked at my local tafe university and they were throwing away a bunch. I then covered them in plasticine. The eyes were just balls of painted super sculpey.

To get the mouth of the singing ghost character to sing the lyrics I had to lip sync it, and I did that by filming the lead singers mouth singing the lyrics. Then animated the characters mouth to move exactly the same way frame by frame(shooting doubles)

I shot for about 5 weeks in the main location, and extra stuff later on.

Yay for me in Auz its the summer holidays! That mean i have until the end of January off school! I've got 2 films currently in the making hopefully they will both be done by January 10th so i can enter them in Trop Fest.
I will release them online as soon as i can. Here's a pic of my set up on one of the animations. It's set in a kindergarten class room.

Today is my 16th b-day!

i have exams today and yesterday and for 2 weeks and then another 2 weeks in 2 weeks, so not much film making happinin. 2morrow i am going to Melbourne to the ATOM awards which should be fun, and to meet this crazy stop motion fellow. Oh and i was in the paper, in Camberra, because my film got into the Camberra film festival which is pretty cool, just a few lines though.

My film 'Dead Rock SKetch' got into this internation film festival called 'Kids For Kids' which is going to eb held in Naples in december. There were 500 films entered and 'Dead Rock Sketch' Was selected as one of the 56 finalists. The festival is going to be help in Naples in December, there's a chance they might fly me over.

Well yesterday i went out and bought $160 worth of silcone stuff. I came home and i began to use it. Unfortunately i didn't read all the instructions and it was a bit of a disaster. Here are some piccs:Making ing the mold

I just got back from work experience. it was awesome! i loved all of it. Got to go to Melbourne, met tonnes of great animators. I had alot of fun. Some animators i met are, Adam Elliot who made the oscar winning 'Havey Crumpet'
I met Anthony Lucas, who got nominated for an Oscar in 2005, for his short animation: The Mysterious Geographic Explorations Of Jasper Morello
I also met Darcy Prendergast who made Ron The Zookepper which got into annecy. I also met Nick Hilligoss who does alot of work for stopmoshorts.com I learn't alot from meeting and talking to these animators.

Sorry everyone for not posting in sooo long. I've just been sooooooo busy with school work, i am the worst procrastinator! Anyway, so everyone should check out my new newgrounds page: vdub.newgrounds.com
Because there's a blog on there, i will update that about as often as i update this but with info more about my newgrounds short films not really big productions and general stuff.
For any of youse who didn't know, im gonna be making a cd-saw 2, i am, i've made the set got the script all i've gotta do is animate. It is short, and will hopefully be done by clock day 2007! I will post a pic as soon as i begin.

More news i'm going to Melbourne next week for work experience. Going to work on an professional short stop-motion animation film there for a week. that will be very fun i hope. I've been looking forward to it for ages and ages. My tests are all finished for the week but i've got a 5 page assignment on car safety due in on friday (2 days) and i haven't started.

Well ill try to start animation on SAW 2 this satureday, cause im leaving on sunday and won't be back unitl saturday next week.

1 more peice of news, i think im gonna be putting my transformers collab peice into a different transformers collab. I think it's gonna be like an easter egg, but ill tell you more when i know more.

That's right my 20$ mic just broke, so i had a perfect excuse to get a much better one. I got a 300$AUD Rode Podcaster made here in Australia. It's a great microphone with broadcast quality and conects right into my computer through usb! So expect much better sound quality from now on!

I am sooo sad, these as all holdays have gone so quickly. I won't be doing much animation stuff for the next few weeks but you can probably expect to see a clock day movie, maybe if i have time. Hey all sorry fo the lack of posts. Just minutes before writting this i was standing in a studio with Tatia Rosenthal, an infamous animator from the US. She is currently in Australia making a feature Stop-Motion animation film '9.99' I was lucky enough to get to visit the set as they were aniamting. I got a 1 hours tour throughout the studio. It was so great. I got to see a few of the big sets for the film including a huge 10m squared park with tonnes of trees etc... I went through the whole studio even watched a few minutes of the film. IT'S FINALLY HOLIDAYS!!!

Thats right i now have 3 weeks of doing what ever! And you can expect nothing but movie making!

I'm really sorry i've kept you waiting so long on this info about my new feature. I just really don't know much about it myself. Where should i start, alright.
These holidays i will be in preproduction for a feature that i am planing to finish about half way into next year. It's is one that i have had in my head for a few years. It is going to be half Claymation and half Live Action. I am making the claymation half first, i am hoping to have this finished by the end of the christmas holidays, so in about late febuary 2008. I will release certain clips from it as well as many picture on this blog as the process happens. Note: i will be constantly posting pictures of production on this blog, so check for updates.
Over the next few weeks, i will be posting about every 2nd or 3rd day perhaps more depending whats happening.
Don't worry, although i will be making this film, i will also be animating small shorts for newgrounds and you can expect atleast 2 in the next month or 2. including a big character moving test for my feature which will give you a look at many of the charcter designs in movement. I will post this on newgrounds, and it will be a muic video set to the song "Super Massive Black Hole" By Muse.
I won't tell you much of the story of the feature until i have written more of the script. At a later date. I think that's enough for now, check for updates because there will be many in the coming weeks. I leave you with the first look at the main character puppert, but is by no means finished! It's not as cool as it will look i promise, plus the lighting is shit. Anyway here it is:
P.S. I want to make a real website for the feature, proabbly a flash one. i will design the elements of it (design etc...), but i need someone or some people who know about how a site like saw3.com works, and are made. Behind The Scenes!

I took a whole tone of footage while i was making Pico And The Butchery, and i will make a 10-15 minute behind the scenes video. I may release it on youtube or perhaps put it on a dvd, if i make one. I think i will make an awesome dvd once i start getting more fans. I've got tonnes of good stuff to put on it. I just found all this stuff on my old computer, all my first animation stuff i did with lego studios when i was 10-12. Its really cool seeing it again. Anyway i might post some of it if i can convert it from the old avi video. It won't import into any of my video editing programs. man, i'm soooooo tired!!! I didn't sleep at all for the last 2 nights! Seriously, i have been desperately trying to finish this damn project! I had major prolems with the flash file, it seems that flash 9 isn't as good as i might have thought.
